Women in the Workforce of Indonesia
Although the working conditions for women in Indonesia have improved somewhat, there is still plenty of work to be done. A woman should be able to be treated in the same way a man would be treated, like a human being. Traditionally women in Indonesia are expected to have a few babies and then spend the rest of their lives cooking and cleaning, while the man of the household goes out and works and handles the big decisions. A woman is just as capable of earning a living and working as a man. Only 51% of women are employed whereas 78% of men are. Women deserve equality and equal treatment everywhere, including the workforce .
Women are discriminated against in the workplace and can be subjected to violence. They are perceived to be weak because of the fact that they give birth to children, in my opinion being able to survive the excruciating pain of childbirth makes you pretty tough. Women usually do not receive full pay when they take maternity leave, sometimes women are even fired after they give birth in Indonesia. It's as if a woman's sole purpose in life is to give birth and once they do they are utterly useless and must stay at home to serve her family .The fact that being a woman is almost like a weakness in Indonesia really riles me. A woman deserves to be given equal opportunity in the workforce, isn't it human right to be treated like a human?
Aside from being treated poorly, women often do not hold position of high power. A woman is always working under a man. Of the few female led companies in Indonesia they are usually smaller and unstable. this is because women don't have access to the credits in Indonesia that growth for a business relies on. Women deserve at least the chance to be successful and to be taken seriously. What makes a man so much better than a woman?
It's time that Indonesia breaks through the stigma that women are only mothers and nothing else. A woman can have a career on top of being a mother, a woman can be just as or even more successful than a man. For example, my mom is being an excellent mother to me and my sister and also is in school to become a nurse. It is 2014 and Indonesia needs to open their eyes and realize that women can handle many things at once and just as capable as men. Women deserve equality, they deserve to be able to enter the workforce free of fear.
